You can also style your hair in different ways, plus its better for your hair and the curls hold better and last a long time. If you find a hairstyle that you like, you can take a pic to a stylist and watch how it is styled. Most stylists are very helpful with showing their clients how to style their hair at home, too.
Try getting a cut that will give your hair dimension. A bob with layers will make it look like your isn't laying flat, as thick hair tends to do.

I think you might be able to try this if you thin your hair. You can just ask your stylist to thin it so it can work with this style

4. Pin Back Some Of Your Layers

5. Loosely Curl Your hair.
